Health Benefits of Dance

Dancing is just more than basic exercise, it can bring numerous health benefits throughout our lives, improving our physical, cognitive and emotional health.

Physical Benefits

Dance classes provide an effective and balanced workout and most muscles within the body are used. Quick, high energy steps, giving a full aerobic workout are complimented with slower, graceful moves, which tone the muscles.

Dance improves posture, stamina, agility and flexibility, strengthening the body’s core muscles.

Stronger bones
The particular style of stamping steps in Flamenco and Tap or the jumping steps in Jazz, Contemporary and Ballet all improve bone density, reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

Healthier heart & lungs
Studies have shown that dancing can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.

Cognitive Benefits

Requiring focus, coordination and varying levels and intricacy of motor skills, dance also exercises the mind. These benefits can be utilised at any age and can be particularly beneficial in preventing or reducing certain problems in later life.

Improved balance and spatial awareness
Professor Tracey Howe, of Glasgow Caledonian University, published a research paper in 2011 which analysed numerous studies of the effect of different forms of exercise on the elderly, which found that compared to other forms of exercise such as cycling and walking, dancing has a greater impact on improving balance, therefore reducing the risk of falls.

The New England Journal of Medicine published a study in 2003 citing that dance, more than any other leisure activity, reduced the risk of dementia in elderly patients.

Emotional Benefits

Students can find the emotional expression required in dance, an effective way to release tension and stress.

The social aspect of dance classes, can aid improvement with:

  • self-confidence
  • self-esteem
  • social skills
  • and psychological wellbeing
